Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL QUESTIONS

What does it take to start a GreenMoms group?

Motivation to spread green ideas and a few people.  Your group can be as big as you want it.  It can meet as often as you want, and you can organize whatever you want.  Find meeting and event ideas in our discussion forum or on the EVENTS page.

How do you decide what to recommend in the Resources section?
All resources start as a recommendation from one of our GreenMoms, then we check it out either by reading about it and/or discussing it with the business owner, or we use the product or website ourselves.

How do you define green?
Green is...taking action that reduces a carbon footprint on the environment in any way, small or large; taking action to reduce pollution within our bodies and our homes; reducing or eliminating our demand for products that pollute the world; changing our demand for products, services and businesses to those that sustain the world rather than deplete it; it is re-using things we already have; it is reducing our waste; it is recycling what we can.

Why green "Moms" and not "Dads" or "Families"?
Although we say "Moms", we welcome everyone wanting to learn about green living. The title "Moms" is a spin off from the title of our original local group. It is how we started. We feel it serves a specific niche yet we are happy to include everyone. We have dads and non-mom women in our groups too.

I'd like to suggest something for your site, how do I do that?
Please send it to 'Submit A Resource' found on the right blue menu bar of most pages.  Submissions must be recommendations, not ads for services or a personal business.

How do you decide what level GreenMometer content should be? Aren't some of the topics controversial?
We decide based on what we know and have read to be true. We have tried to keep it three levels for aesthetics and simplification even though we know some of the topics could be spread into many more levels. We are trying to have uncluttered pages. Yes, some of the topics may be controversial and people may not agree with where we have placed some suggestions, but we welcome any feedback with references so we can update or revise our suggestions if appropriate. Feel free to discuss any of this in our Discussion Forum.

WEBSITE USE QUESTIONS

How Do I Get Discussion Forum Update Notifications Automatically?
Discussion Forum updates can be sent to you automatically.  They are available through an RSS feed which can come to you directly either into your RSS reader or into your email reader.  Each email software package may handle this differently.  For example, look for an option to show the RSS feed in your inbox to have the new topic notification be in your list of emails.

What is an RSS Feed?
Here are several links to learn more about RSS feeds:

How Do I Get Notified When There is a New Discussion Forum Topic or Post Made?
To be notified when there are new posts, simply click on the orange button next to the level for which you'd like to receive an RSS feed into your email reader.
1. For example, if you would like to know when there is any new post at all in the Global Discussion Topics, click on the orange button to the left of the the header GLOBAL DISCUSSION TOPICS.

2.  Another example, if you would like to receive an RSS feed any time there is a new post only in your own Group's forum (say for Davis-Yolo), click on the orange button to the right of the line  DAVIS - YOLO COUNTY, CA, USA

How Do I Get Responses to a Discussion Forum Topic or Post Made?
There are two ways to receive RSS Notifications when someone has replied to your post:

1.  You can select the RSS orange button to receive notifications for the topic (see related FAQ above)

2.  When you create your post, click the SUBSCRIBE button just above the space in which you type your post, then click SUBMIT
